Is IP68 Not The Highest Protection Level?
Jun 29, 2023

How much do you know about the protection level of water pump motors, which are commonly used by us all?

Today we will introduce some relevant knowledge about the protection level of water pump motors.

1.What is the level of protection?

The so-called protection level refers to the different degrees of classification that can prevent the infiltration of dust and water.

The commonly used protection level for water pump motors is usually marked with IP55 or IP68, which originates from IEC60529 or GB/T4208.

2. What does IP mean?

IP is the acronym for Ingress Protection, used to represent the two capabilities of mechanical and electrical products: dustproof and waterproof.

The traditional IP level consists of two digits in the format IP__ __.

The first digit marks the level of dust prevention, indicating the level of prevention of solid foreign objects from entering, divided into 7 levels from 0 to 6.

Electric Motor

Water pumps with lower protection levels are usually ordinary household products, which may be IP44 because the design and installation environment of the water pump will not pose significant risks, or the characteristics of the water pump structure are not suitable for higher protection enhancement.

The conventional civilian dry installed water pump is usually IP54 or IP55, which is mainly determined by the motor type.

The second number marks the waterproof level, indicating the waterproof ability, divided into 9 levels from 0 to 8.

IEC60529 was updated in 2013, and GB/T4208 was also updated in 2017. After the update, the waterproof level changed from 0-8 to 0-9, which means there are 10 waterproof levels. The newly added 9 represents protection against high-temperature and high-pressure water spraying.

3. Differences between IP and IPX

IPX is an international universal waterproof level certification system used to label the waterproof level of products on many instruments and equipment, and is the most common technical indicator.

The standards for testing each IP waterproofing level are different. We often see annotation levels like IPX8. This label indicates that there is no limit on the dust level, and failure to do so does not mean that there is no dust prevention capability.
